There are moments when life hands you a truth so raw, so utterly shattering, that the only way forward is through the heart of it. For me, that moment arrived with the recent passing of my son’s father. It was a loss steeped in layers of the long, shadowed dance with addiction – a grief I’d unknowingly carried for years before his body ever left this earthly plane.

In the quiet aftermath, surrounded by the remnants of a life lived on the fringes, the truth became chillingly clear. Unopened mail, dishes still waiting in the sink from days past, food expiring in the fridge – these weren’t just signs of neglect; they were the heartbreaking echoes of a soul slowly consumed, a slow-motion vanishing that left behind a different kind of void.

Grieving Twice: The Unique Pain of Addiction’s Loss

And in that space, a realization settled upon me: I had grieved him twice. Once, when the insidious tendrils of addiction claimed him, stealing the man I knew and loved into a realm of choices and struggles I could not penetrate. And again, as his physical form finally slipped away, leaving only memories and the stark silence of his early departure.

It was from this deeply personal crucible that the meditation, “When an Addict Dies: A Meditation for Grief, Forgiveness, and the Return to Innocence,” began to flow through me. As a hypnotherapist specializing in spiritual healing, and as a medium who has long communed with wisdom beyond the veil, I knew I needed to create a sacred space not just for myself, but for anyone else navigating this particular, intricate tapestry of sorrow.

It became a journey back to the river, a return to the timeless currents that underscore every human experience.

The River: A Sacred Dialogue with What Was

In the quiet of my own practice, as the words began to emerge, I felt the presence of those unseen guides, much like when I channeled the soul of a beloved British medium for my book, Whispers Beyond the Veil: Channeled Teachings Inspired by the Spirit World. There is a poetic cadence to true spiritual insight, a gentle unfolding that transcends ordinary language.

The meditation opens:

Close your eyes. Let the world soften its edges. Let your breath become the tide, rising… and falling… without effort… Allow yourself to arrive here, in this quiet space between what was… and what still longs to be healed.

This invitation isn’t merely for relaxation; it’s a profound summoning of your truest self to meet with raw honesty. When you step closer to that symbolic river, you realize you are not alone. They are there.

Not as they were in the final chapters, fragmented and lost, but whole… aware… waiting.

This is the promise of spirit work: the glimpse beyond the limitations of earthly form, past the pain and suffering, to the essence of the soul. We allow all emotions, anger, grief, love, confusion, even relief, to rise, knowing that “all of it belongs.” There is no room for judgment in true healing.

Unspoken Truths & Ancestral Echoes in Grief

The meditation then guides you into a dialogue, a space where truths long held captive can finally be spoken. It’s here that the unique agony of loving someone through addiction often finds its voice.

Tell them where it hurt right from the beginning. Tell them where it still hurts now. Tell them what it cost you, emotionally… physically… spiritually… financially…. And how it felt to hold it in. Tell them what it was like to lose them while they were still alive.

This is not about accusation, but liberation. It’s about honoring your own truth in the presence of what was. And then, you will experience a journey backward through the river of time, revealing a tapestry far older than your personal pain.

You are shown moments not just from this life, but from those that came before. Ancestral echoes. Unspoken grief. Patterns carried quietly through generations. You begin to see… This pain did not begin with them.

Through my work as a medium, I’ve seen countless pieces of evidence revealing how the past ripples into the present. We witness the lineage of suffering, the survival strategies that became the very chains that tether and bind. And in this expansive view, a deeper understanding can emerge:

And somewhere along the way, two souls, yours and theirs, chose to meet. Not by accident. But by agreement. A soul contract. To love. To challenge. To awaken. And even to break… what could no longer exist in present form.

This perspective, born of channeled wisdom, offers a radical reframing of deep pain. What if, on a soul level, there was an agreement to challenge each other through this connection?

Reclaiming Innocence & Finding Peace After Loss

This meditation offers a powerful moment of reclaiming self and releasing what was never yours to carry.

Say to them: “I lost you twice.” … “I could not stay… not because you were unworthy of love… but because I was worthy of peace.”

This distinction is crucial. It’s not forgiveness enabling further suffering; it’s a fiercely compassionate act of self-preservation. And then, a vision of liberation:

Now… imagine… They step into the river. And as they do, something begins to lift. The density… the distortion… the weight of all they carried. From the other side of tomorrow… they are free. Not erased but returned.

This profound insight, the “return to innocence,” was a message that resonated deeply through me. It speaks to the soul’s inherent purity, often obscured by life’s trials, particularly addiction. They are returned to a place of stillness, freed from the chains that bound them, a quiet lake where “mist rising like breath from the earth… a soft hue of violet wrapping the air in gentleness.” They are at peace.

And from that place, an offering of energy, a release for you. You are empowered to receive only what feels true, to gently release the debts, the weight of their choices, the unfinished pieces that do not belong to your soul.

Say, quietly or within: “I return to you what is yours. And I reclaim what is mine.”

This journey through spiritual hypnosis for grief and loss is not about forgetting or even forgiving, but about remembering with less pain. It’s about opening a doorway, not necessarily to force forgiveness, but to the possibility of peace, however small that crack of light may be.
