People often seek hypnosis with the hope of recovering repressed childhood memories. They somehow believe this will resolve the symptoms of childhood trauma carried into adulthood. I explain that it’s not the memories per se we are trying to capture through childhood trauma hypnotherapy, but more accurately the feelings, emotions, or beliefs associated with a collection of themes and memories. Uncovering this helps identify the origin of unhealthy patterns and behaviors. It also creates the blueprint for new neural pathways which in turn deactivates trauma triggers and manifests more positive outcomes. The techniques I use help clients focus on themes and memories most poignant to their current struggles, which is a more productive approach to childhood trauma recovery.

Why not focus on recovering repressed childhood memories? First, a memory is an interpretation seen through the convoluted lens of personal perception. Next, consider the likelihood of trying to remember something that happened decades ago from the viewpoint of an 8-year-old. Part of what you remember may contain pieces of factual information, however, from a practical therapeutic standpoint, how would knowing this help you overcome unhealthy relationship patterns, overeating, anxiety, or lack of confidence? It wouldn’t. Our work together is focused on the things we can positively influence, the feelings, emotions and beliefs specific to you that drive unwanted behaviors or patterns. The point of dipping into the past is to cull out the wisdom and set the stage for a less arduous path ahead.

Some clients argue that knowing whether something did or did not happen would allow them closure. This is a slippery slope that I promise you will not lead to greater levels of inner peace and emotional quietude. Now we are left wondering how much of the memory is accurate or factual, whether to trust it, who else could verify it, and what to do with the information we think we have recovered. Too many times family members argue about the accuracy of their version of the story, and nothing is ever resolved. This further highlights the importance of focusing our energy inward verses outward.

Ask yourself this question: am I more interested in recovering unpleasant memories or would I rather focus on creating a future that better aligns with the authentic self? You are not your trauma. It is part of your story; however, it does not dictate your future. It is far more useful to learn from the past, even if it’s painful, than to hold yourself hostage to it. The primary goal of hypnotherapy and the work I do, is to help clients shed any further remnants of intergenerational trauma and discover who they are beneath the trauma. Clients are typically surprised and relieved to discover much of their trauma has been inadvertently absorbed from a parent but doesn’t represent the truth of who they are.

Hypnotherapy is considered the gateway to the subconscious mind where problems are created and most importantly where they are resolved. A seasoned practitioner will use a variety of techniques and tools to help a client resolve subconscious conflicts and symptoms of childhood trauma that cause emotional turmoil in adulthood. Through this process, a client is empowered to create a new formula for life with greater self-compassion, freedom, authenticity and inner peace.
