I value intuition over formal protocol and textbook explanations; clients over clinicians in identifying the most effective formula for recovery; joy over suffering – as most of the pressure we place on ourselves is simply unnecessary, misguided, and masochistic.
The vicious cycle of “Feel Bad/Distract” ….
Missy* had been struggling with weight her entire life.
She remembers being 7 years old and her mother discouraging her from eating ice cream after her ballet recital.
“At 5 years old, I began associating food with feelings of shame, unworthiness and embarrassment.”
Food became a punishment/reward system that followed her into her adulthood and she routinely “binged” every time she felt bad about herself. Each time a client questioned her professional judgment or bruised her already fragile self-image, she headed to the fridge. Whenever her sister called and it erupted into conflict, again, she turned to food.
It then became like a chain reaction of smoking, followed by a trip to the fridge and then later, the cupboard to grab a glass of wine. Missy realized this “too much” behavior never seemed to be enough to calm her mind or body, dissolve her inner angst or put her back on the path to feeling confident and grounded.
Emotional triggers teach us what we need to change….
In treatment, we spent several sessions identifying emotional triggers that created a “feel bad/distract” cycle. First, we worked on establishing boundaries with her clients. Missy realized, now an expert in her field and in high demand, she did not have to accept business from just anyone. Simply by trusting her own instincts and gatekeeping skills, she could easily stave off unnecessary headaches and drama.
As a private contractor with more flexibility and control of her schedule than most, she established clearly delineated time frames between work hours and personal time. Simply by turning off her phone and computer and resisting the urge to answer texts, emails, and phone calls well into the evening hours, she could have time to rest, relax and recharge.
This set the stage and created more time for self-care.
Regarding her personal life, she made it a practice of not answering family phone calls during work hours. Emergencies could easily be communicated via text or voice mail. She also realized there were some issues and topics that could remain “off limits” to her family – as she did not need their advice, judgment, or commentary. Again, she would rely on her own instincts to establish healthy boundaries rather than feeling trapped or stuck in old patterns. This created feelings of freedom and empowerment – the very shift we needed to begin Missy’s journey.
Changing our emotional and physical response to stress….
Missy knew that even with these deliberate changes now in place, that it was not necessarily realistic to think her work or life would never create a stress response. Using a technique referred to as a Self-Diagnostic Trance, Missy was able to experience how stress first manifests in her physical body – from the anger and frustration spinning in her head to the heaviness and tightness in her chest extending into her intestines and lower back.
To pull her out of this “fight or flight” response pattern which triggered her binging and shift her back into a state of emotional/physical stability, we used a tool called an “anchor.” Missy identified a calm, peaceful scene (one kind of “anchor”) – a beach in Hawaii – and imagined the feeling of the warm sun on her face and skin, the sound of the waves as they reach the shore, the vision of dolphins playing in the ocean and the taste/smell of the cleansing salt water air. Every time she experienced a “trigger,” she would now breath in this calming scene/image (AKA “anchor”) and upon releasing her breath, she would think of the words “let it go” while relaxing her head, jaw, shoulders and chest.
This gave Missy concrete and practical tools for identifying triggers and how they manifest, as well as how to dissolve and extinguish them so she could make better decisions.
She now understood the best decisions are made when we are in a positive frame of mind.
Replacing old self-defeating behavior with more empowering choices….
Now that Missy had better control over her thoughts, feelings, and emotions – and her reaction to stress – she was ready to begin her journey toward weight loss and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
In the chair, we began by expanding her repertoire of behavioral choices or options in response to stress. She could consciously choose to journal or phone a friend if she needed to vent; she could take a 10-minute walk when her mood was spiraling or listen to a CD of calming music or sounds of nature.
With all these new choices at her fingertips, she began to dissociate food as the only means of managing unpleasant emotions.
